Finding the area of a circle is the moment geometry stops being about straight edges and starts being about curves, and it is one of the most useful measurement skills a middle school student learns. Once students know that the radius is the distance from the center to the edge, and that pi is the constant that connects a circle’s width to the space inside it, they can calculate the area of anything round — a garden bed, a pizza, a rug, a fountain, a bike wheel.
