Reading comprehension is the skill of pulling meaning out of a text instead of simply decoding the words on the page. By third grade, students are expected to name a story’s main idea, follow the sequence of events, and explain why a character does what they do — all with evidence drawn from the text itself. This baking cookies reading comprehension worksheet builds those habits with a short original story about a girl who learns that the steps in a recipe have to be done in order.
The worksheet opens with an illustrated story page, so students read the whole passage before they meet a single question. The questions page then works through the passage from three different angles: four fill-in-the-bubble questions on main idea, sequence, and character motivation; three fill-in-the-blank sentences that send students back into the text for a specific detail; and one written response that asks them to explain an idea in their own words using details from the story.
