Description
Two consonants that slide together at the front of a word are a blend, and gl and gr are one of the trickiest pairs to hear apart. The difference is a single sound in the middle, so a child who is still guessing will write gr for glue and gl for grapes. This gl and gr blends worksheet slows that moment down: say the picture name, listen to the second sound, then write the blend that starts it.
Six picture cards each show one object with the beginning blend missing from its word. Students name the picture, hear the blend, and print gl or gr on the line to finish grapes, glove, grass, globe, glue, and grill. Two sentences at the bottom then ask them to write a whole word from the set, so the blend has to survive out of isolation. Print it for small-group phonics, morning work, a literacy center, or homework, and use the answer key to check a stack of papers in under a minute.
