Description
Contractions are one of the first pieces of grammar a second grader can actually see working, and this butterfly not contractions worksheet keeps the focus on the six most common ones built with the word not. Students look at a pair of words, find the shorter word that joins them, and write it on the line. A cheerful butterfly resting on a flower carries the theme without ever getting in the way of the words.
The page opens with a Word Box holding six contractions in alphabetical order. Below it, six cards each show a word pair such as can + not or would + not, and the child writes the matching contraction underneath. Because the box order and the answer order do not line up, students have to read rather than pair the first blank with the first word. A final section reverses the move: a contraction is given, and the child writes the two words it stands for. An answer key is included on page two.
