About this resource
Description
A contraction joins two words into one shorter word and puts an apostrophe where the missing letters used to be. The Butterfly Will Contractions Worksheet gives second graders focused practice with one family of contractions: the ones built from a pronoun and the word will. Students learn that she will becomes she’ll, that they will becomes they’ll, and that the apostrophe always stands in for the two letters w and i that were dropped. Because every item on the page follows the same rule, children can see the pattern instead of memorizing a list, which is exactly what the Common Core standard on contractions asks of readers and writers at this grade.
This butterfly will contractions worksheet is a printable two-page PDF with a cheerful butterfly theme. Page one opens with a Word Box holding the six contractions the sheet teaches. Six numbered cards follow, each showing a pair of words with a plus sign between them and a wide writing line underneath, so students choose the matching contraction from the box and write it out by hand. A short second section flips the task around: a contraction is given and the child writes the two words it stands for. Page two is a complete answer key, so grading takes seconds. As a 2nd grade contractions worksheet it keeps the workload light enough for independent practice while still asking for real handwriting on every line.
What’s Included
- A two-page printable PDF sized for standard 8.5 x 11 paper
- A Word Box with six pronoun contractions: he’ll, I’ll, it’ll, she’ll, they’ll and we’ll
- Six word-pair cards with roomy handwriting lines for second-grade printing
- A reverse practice section that asks students to expand a contraction back into two words
- A full answer key on the final page
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It teaches one rule at a time. Every item uses will, so the apostrophe pattern is easy to notice and easy to repeat.
- It works in both directions. Building a contraction and taking one apart are different skills, and the sheet asks for both.
- It builds reading fluency. Contractions appear constantly in stories and dialogue, so recognizing them on sight makes reading smoother.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
- Read each finished sentence aloud both ways so students hear how natural the contraction sounds.
- Use the sheet as a warm-up before a writing block, then challenge students to use two of the contractions in their own sentences.
- Laminate a copy for a literacy center and let partners quiz each other with dry-erase markers.
- Send it home as homework or extra practice for a child who is still separating every word.
