About this resource
Description
A contraction is two words joined into one, with an apostrophe standing in for the letters that were dropped, and second graders meet them everywhere they read. This contractions word bank worksheet gives them a short, supported set of the six most common ones and asks for the joined form in writing, which is where the apostrophe actually has to be placed correctly. Seeing do not become don’t on the page is what turns a rule the child has heard into something they can produce on their own.
The top of the page holds a word bank of six contractions. Under it, six items give the two separate words and a full-width line for the joined form, so the child chooses from the bank rather than guessing. The answers do not run in the order the bank prints them, so every item has to be read. At the bottom the sheet turns the skill around: two sentences each carry a contraction in bold that is not in the bank at all, and the child writes the two words it stands for. Print it, read the bank aloud together once, and let students work down the page on their own.
What’s Included
- A printable page with eight contraction items, plus a matching answer key
- A word bank of six common contractions to choose from
- Six write-the-contraction items with wide, 2nd-grade writing lines
- Two sentences that ask for the two words behind a bold contraction
- An original illustration and a clean layout that prints on letter paper
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Writing the contraction, rather than circling it, is what forces the apostrophe into the right place.
- The word bank removes the spelling guesswork so the child’s attention stays on the joining itself.
- Working in both directions, joining and separating, keeps children from learning contractions as a list to memorize.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
This 2nd grade contractions worksheet works well right after a mini-lesson on apostrophes. Ask children to point to the letters that disappeared in each answer, then find three more contractions in the book they are reading. Partners can trade papers and read each other’s sentences aloud with the two words put back in, which makes the swap audible as well as visible. The contractions word bank worksheet also makes a quick review before a grammar check, or a calm independent activity for a literacy center.
