About this resource

Description

Alphabetizing gets interesting when words start with the same letter, and this Christmas Words Alphabetical Order Worksheet is built around exactly that moment. Students stop looking only at the first letter and learn to read on to the second, third, or even fourth letter until every word has its own place. It is a key dictionary and glossary skill, and holiday words make the practice feel festive.

The Christmas Words Alphabetical Order Worksheet gives students three sets of four holiday words. Every word in a set begins with the same letter, and each set goes one letter deeper than the one before it. In Set 1 the second letter decides the order, in Set 2 the third letter decides it, and in Set 3 students must read all the way to the fourth letter. Students copy each set onto four numbered lines in ABC order. To finish, they write a few sentences telling how they decided the order of the words in Set 3. This 3rd grade alphabetical order worksheet works well as independent practice, a literacy center, a morning warm-up, or a quick check before a dictionary lesson.

What’s Included

  • One printable worksheet with three sets of Christmas words to put in ABC order
  • Twelve numbered writing lines, four for each set
  • A short written-response section that asks students to explain their thinking
  • A complete answer key with a model explanation

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids

  • It builds step by step. Each set asks students to look one letter further, so the skill grows in small, clear steps instead of one big jump.
  • It makes the method visible. Explaining how Set 3 was sorted turns a quiet habit into a strategy students can say out loud and use again.
  • Holiday words keep it fun. Familiar words like cookies, bells, and star let students focus on alphabetizing instead of decoding.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

  • Before students write, ask them to predict which letter will decide the order in each set.
  • Pair the page with a real dictionary and have students find two of the words.
  • Let partners compare their Set 3 explanations and choose the clearest one.
  • Challenge early finishers to make a fourth set from your classroom holiday word wall.
