About this resource
Description
Putting words in ABC order is a skill children use every time they open a dictionary, a glossary, or an index. This space alphabetical order worksheet gives third graders ten space words to sort, and many of them start with the same letter, so students must look past the first letter to decide which word comes first.
About This Worksheet
In Part A, students read a box of ten space words, including comet, crater, galaxy, orbit, oxygen, rocket, and rover, and write them in ABC order on ten numbered lines. Five pairs of words share a first letter, and two pairs only separate at the third letter, so careful letter-by-letter checking is required. In Part B, students circle the word in each of four pairs that comes first, then write the number of the letter they had to compare, from the second letter all the way to the fourth. A friendly rocket illustration ties the page to the space theme.
What’s Included
- A ten-word space word box with ten numbered writing lines
- Four compare-the-pair cards that ask which letter decided the order
- A complete answer key
Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, words that begin with the same letter push students beyond first-letter sorting, which is the heart of the 3rd grade ABC order standard. Second, naming the letter number in Part B makes students explain their thinking instead of guessing. Third, the space vocabulary builds science words that students will meet again in reading and in class.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use this 3rd grade ABC order worksheet as a literacy center, morning work, or a quick check before a dictionary lesson. Students can write each space word on a card and sort the cards on a desk before copying the order. At home, families can use the space alphabetical order worksheet to review vocabulary, then add new words such as moon, planet, or star and decide where each one belongs.
