About this resource
Description
This math alphabetical order worksheet helps 3rd grade students practice putting words in ABC order while they review important math vocabulary. Words like add, digit, divide, fraction and subtract give children a fresh reason to look closely at every letter, and the sheet builds dictionary skills that carry into reading and spelling.
Students begin with a box of ten math words. They write the words in ABC order on ten numbered lines, looking at the second, third, or even fourth letter whenever two words begin the same way. In Part B, children circle the word in each pair that comes first and write the number of the letter they had to compare. Use the math alphabetical order worksheet as a literacy center, morning work, a vocabulary warm-up before a math lesson, or a quick homework page.
What’s Included
- A ten-word math vocabulary box to put in ABC order
- Ten numbered writing lines for the sorted words
- Four word pairs that ask which word comes first and which letter decided it
- A complete answer key for fast checking
Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, it moves students past first-letter sorting and teaches them to compare the second, third and fourth letters, which is exactly what they need to use a dictionary or glossary. Second, it links two subjects, so children review math words such as factor, angle and equal while they practice a language skill. Third, the Part B question asks students to explain their thinking with a letter number, so you can see at a glance who understands the rule and who needs more support. This 3rd grade ABC order worksheet keeps the work short, clear and focused.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Have students look up each math word in a student dictionary after they finish, or ask them to add two more math words to the list and fit them into the order. At home, parents can write math words on index cards and let children race to line them up. You can also pair the sheet with a math glossary lesson so students see why alphabetical order matters.
