Alphabetical order looks finished the moment a student can sing the alphabet, and then a word box hands them ant and aphid on the same page. This Insects ABC Order Worksheet is built out of that problem: five of its ten insect words share a first letter with the word beside them, so the first letter settles nothing and the student has to keep reading. That habit is what a dictionary, a glossary, an index and a contact list all quietly require.
The Insects ABC Order Worksheet is a two page printable for 3rd Grade. Page one holds a word box of ten insect names printed out of order, ten numbered lines to rewrite them on, and a second section of four word pairs where students circle the word that comes first and then write the number of the letter that decided it. The pairs separate at the second, third and fourth letters, so the answer is never a guess. Mosquito and moth are the hardest pair in the box: they agree for two letters before they part.
