About this resource

Description

Beginning sounds are the first building block of reading, and deciding whether a word starts with k or c is one of the trickiest parts of that skill. The Circle Beginning Sounds K-C Worksheet gives students a clear, printable way to practice the hard /k/ sound and the two letters that spell it. Because k and c make the very same sound, children cannot hear which letter to use, so they need a rule they can lean on. This page puts that rule right at the top: use k before i and e, and use c before a, o, and u.

This first grade beginning sounds worksheet is a two page printable with an answer key. On the first page, students look at six pictures, say each picture name out loud, and circle the letter that finishes the word. Six more word endings follow, and students write k or c on the line to spell each word correctly. Print it, hand it out, and students can work independently at a desk, in a literacy center, or at the kitchen table.

What’s Included

  • One printable worksheet page with six picture cards and six write the letter items
  • A reference strip at the top that states the k and c spelling rule
  • A complete answer key on the final page
  • Original illustrations for kite, corn, car, key, cake, and kitten
  • A print ready PDF sized for standard 8.5 x 11 paper

There are three reasons the Circle Beginning Sounds K-C Worksheet helps kids. First, it turns a confusing spelling choice into a rule a child can apply every single time. Second, the pictures give students a spoken word to hold on to, so they hear the sound before they choose the letter. Third, the two parts move from recognizing the letter to writing it, so students practice the same rule in two different ways and remember it longer.

Teachers can use this page as a warm up before a phonics lesson, as a quick check after teaching hard c and k, or as a take home review. Parents can read the rule aloud together, then let their child point to each picture and say the word before circling a letter. For extra practice, add your own word endings to the back of the page, or challenge students to hunt for k and c words in a favorite picture book.
