Description
Hearing the first sound in a spoken word is the doorway to reading, and it is a listening skill long before it is a letter skill. This Beginning Sounds Worksheet asks a child to look at a picture, say its name out loud, and decide which of three letters matches the sound they hear at the very front of the word. That one move — say it, isolate the first sound, match it to a letter — is exactly what phonemic awareness assessments ask for in the fall of kindergarten.
This kindergarten beginning sounds worksheet gives nine picture cards, each with three letter bubbles underneath. Read the direction line aloud, then let students name each picture and fill in the bubble under the letter that starts it. The nine pictures cover nine different consonants, so no two cards test the same sound, and the two letters a child does not pick are always sounds that are genuinely absent from the word. Every card is the same size with the same spacing, so nothing on the page hints at which bubble is correct. The answer key is included on the final page.

Three things make this Beginning Sounds Worksheet a strong fit for early phonics practice. First, the pictures are ordinary objects a kindergartner can already name — a bed, a drum, a fan, a kite — so the only new work is the sound itself, not the vocabulary. Stretch the practice beyond the page. Play an I Spy round using first sounds instead of colors, and let students hunt the room for something that starts with /m/. Sort a basket of small objects or picture cards into two piles by their first sound, then say each pile out loud together. At home, pause on the walk to the car and name three things that start the same way.
