About this resource

Description

Nouns are the naming words in every sentence a child reads and writes, and second graders are ready to sort them into two families. A common noun names any person, place, or thing — a teacher, a park, a river. A proper noun names one particular person, place, or thing, and it always begins with a capital letter — Eloise, Texas, Monday, July. This Common and Proper Nouns List Worksheet gives students a clear, hands-on way to see that difference for themselves, because they build the two lists with their own hands instead of only reading about them.

The sheet opens with a word box of eight everyday nouns. In Part A, students copy each word into the Common Nouns list or the Proper Nouns list, which turns an abstract rule into a simple sorting decision they can check by looking for the capital letter. Part B then flips the task: four quick pairs ask students to circle the proper noun, so they practice spotting one inside a choice instead of copying it. Print this 2nd grade common nouns worksheet for morning work, a grammar center, homework, or a fast review before a language quiz. The included answer key makes it easy to grade in seconds, or to let students check their own work with a partner.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 1 eight-word noun sorting activity and 4 circle-the-proper-noun pairs

Three things make this Common and Proper Nouns List Worksheet work. First, sorting is a low-stress way to learn a rule: students are not asked to invent anything, so all of their attention goes to the one thing that matters, which is whether the word names something general or something particular. Second, writing each word out by hand builds the capital-letter habit, because a child who copies Monday with a capital M is practicing the convention rather than only naming it. Third, the two-part design moves students from supported practice to independent recognition on a single page, which is exactly the progression a grammar lesson needs.

Keep the learning going away from the page. Take a noun walk around the school and have students name a common noun and its proper noun partner for everything they see: a street and Oak Street, a school and its real name, a store and the name on its sign. Play a quick capital-letter hunt in a favorite picture book, using sticky notes to flag every proper noun on a page. At home, families can label a map with proper nouns for states, cities, and rivers, then list the common nouns that go with them. Finish with the Have Fun Teaching Noun Song, which gives the rule a tune students remember long after the worksheet goes home.
