About this resource

Description

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings, like see and sea. This Completing Sentences with Homophones Worksheet gives 3rd grade students practice using the meaning of a whole sentence to decide which spelling belongs, a skill that makes their reading smoother and their writing clearer.

The Completing Sentences with Homophones Worksheet has three parts. In Part A, students read five sentences and write the correct word from a printed homophone pair, such as hoarse or horse and grown or groan. In Part B, they find the wrong homophone in each of four sentences, cross it out, and write the correct word on the line. In Part C, they use three words from Part B in sentences of their own. Use it as a warm-up, a literacy center, homework, or a quick check after a homophones lesson.

What’s Included

  • One printable 3rd grade homophones worksheet with nine true homophone pairs
  • Part A: five choose-and-write sentence items
  • Part B: four cross-out-and-correct items
  • Part C: three lines for writing original sentences
  • A complete answer key with a sample sentence for Part C

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids

First, every item asks students to think about meaning, not just sound, which is the real test of knowing a homophone. Second, fixing mistakes in Part B trains students to proofread their own writing for words like not and knot. Third, writing new sentences in Part C moves each word from recognition into active use, so the correct spelling sticks.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

  • Read each pair aloud and ask students to explain what each word means.
  • Have students draw a quick picture that shows both words in one pair.
  • Let partners trade their Part C sentences and check each other’s spelling.
  • Add the nine pairs from this page to a class homophone chart.
