About this resource

Description

Right and write sound exactly alike, but they never mean the same thing. Right can point to a direction, to a hand, or to a correct answer, while write always means putting words down on paper. Third graders meet this pair of homophones every single day, and swapping one for the other changes the meaning of a whole sentence. This right write homophones worksheet gives students focused practice telling the two apart by reading for meaning instead of listening for sound.

Use this 3rd grade homophones worksheet as morning work, a literacy center rotation, small-group review, or take-home homework. Students begin by filling in six sentences with the word that fits the context, then move on to four sentences that already contain the wrong homophone and have to be corrected. The page finishes with two open lines where children compose sentences of their own, so you can see at a glance whether they truly understand each meaning. A complete answer key sits on the final page for fast checking.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 6 fill-in-the-blank sentences, 4 error-correction sentences, and 2 write-your-own sentence prompts

There are three big reasons this right write homophones worksheet helps children learn. First, every item sits inside a real sentence, so students have to use context clues rather than sound alone. Second, the error-correction section asks children to notice a mistake before they fix it, which is a harder and far more lasting skill than simply picking one of two words. Third, the closing sentence-writing task moves students from recognition into production, which is the point at which a homophone finally sticks.

Away from the page, keep the practice playful. Post a small chart in the classroom with a hand pointing one way for right and a pencil for write, and ask children to point to the correct card when they hear the word in conversation. Play a quick sorting game with index cards, or challenge students to hunt for both spellings in a favorite chapter book and read the sentences aloud. Journal prompts work well too: ask children to write directions from the classroom door to the library, which naturally puts both spellings in the same paragraph.
