Description
Few spelling choices trip up young writers more often than the difference between its and it’s, and this its, it’s homophones worksheet gives students a clear, repeatable way to tell them apart. Its is a possessive word that shows something belongs to a thing, so it is always followed by a noun: the bench lost its paint, the robin flew to its nest. It’s is simply a short way of writing it is, and the apostrophe stands in for the missing letter. Because the two words sound exactly the same, the only way to choose correctly is to read the whole sentence and think about what it means.
This 3rd grade homophones worksheet walks students through that thinking in three steps. In Part A they read six sentences, look at the pair of words printed under each blank, and write the word that completes the sentence. In Part B they become the editor: each of four sentences already contains the wrong word, so students cross it out and write the correct spelling on the line beside it. Part C asks them to write a sentence of their own for each word, which is where the rule really sticks. Print the sheet, let students work through the parts in order, and use the included answer key for quick checking, peer review, or a small-group mini-lesson.

Keep the its, it’s homophones worksheet in a writing folder and pull it out whenever the mistake shows up in a draft. At home, ask your child to hunt for both words in a favorite chapter book and read the sentences aloud. For an extra challenge, have students illustrate one of their Part C sentences and label it.
