Description
Silent e is the first spelling pattern that changes a word a first grader can already read. Add an e to pin and it becomes pine; the e says nothing itself, but it reaches back over the consonant and makes the vowel say its own name. This CVC E Worksheet – Adding gives children thirteen chances to make that switch happen on paper, which is where the pattern stops being a rule they have heard and starts being one they can use on an unfamiliar word.
The first part prints eight short-vowel CVC words with an arrow and a writing line, and the child adds the silent e and writes the new long-vowel word. The second part runs the pattern backwards: five words that already end in silent e, with the child taking the e away and writing the short-vowel word that is left. Working in both directions is what stops the pattern being memorized as a list of word pairs. Print it, read the first item aloud together, and let students say each new word before they write it.
