Description
This Phonemes Worksheet helps young readers hear and count the individual sounds, or phonemes, in short words. Breaking a word into its separate sounds is one of the most important early phonics skills, and it lays the foundation for both reading and spelling. With this phonemes worksheet, first graders practice saying each word slowly, listening for every sound, and writing one sound in each box.
On this printable, students look at a picture, say the word out loud, and stretch it into its sounds. Two completed examples, cat and flag, model how a blend such as fl or st counts as one sound. Then children segment six picture words (frog, stop, sled, crab, drum, and nest) by writing each sound they hear in its own box. Use it during small-group phonics instruction, at a literacy center, or as homework, and check work quickly with the included answer key.
