About this resource
Description
Use this elapsed time half hour worksheet to help students figure out how much time has passed between a starting time and an ending time. Elapsed time is one of the first places where students have to reason with numbers that are not base ten, and starting on the half hour gives them a clean, countable step before quarter hours and single minutes are introduced. Every time on this page falls on the hour or the half hour, so students can count forward in familiar half-hour jumps and build real confidence with the clock.
The worksheet opens with four pairs of analog clocks. Students read the Start clock, read the End clock, and write the elapsed hours and minutes on the two lines below the pair. The intervals cross the hour on purpose, so students cannot get the answer by subtracting the hour numbers alone. The second half of the page moves to word problems written with digital times, where the interval runs from morning into afternoon. One problem asks for the elapsed time and one asks for the ending time, so students practice moving in both directions. A complete answer key is included on the second page.
What’s Included
- Four paired analog clocks with Start and End dials to read and compare
- Two elapsed time word problems using digital A.M. and P.M. times
- Writing lines labeled hours and minutes for every clock pair
- A full answer key on page two
- A printable PDF sized for standard letter paper
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Reading two clocks side by side makes the interval visible, so students see time as a distance rather than as a pair of unrelated numbers.
- Half-hour steps are small enough to count on fingers and large enough to cross the hour, which is exactly where most elapsed time mistakes happen.
- Pairing analog dials with digital word problems helps students transfer the skill to clocks, schedules, and timers they meet outside of school.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
- Model the first clock pair aloud, counting the half hours together before students work alone.
- Hand students a demonstration clock and have them turn the hands from the Start time to the End time.
- Turn the two word problems into a class routine by swapping in the times your own day actually uses, like lunch, recess, and dismissal.
- Use this page as a warm up before a quarter hour or to-the-minute lesson, or send it home as review after one.
This elapsed time half hour worksheet works well as independent practice, as a math center task, or as a quick check before a unit test. Teachers looking for a 3rd grade elapsed time worksheet that keeps the numbers friendly while still asking for real reasoning will find this page an easy fit for a lesson plan or a homeschool morning.
