This First Half Presidents Alphabetical Order Worksheet gives third grade students a purposeful way to practice putting words in ABC order past the first letter. The word box holds ten last names from the first half of the United States presidents, and five of them sit in same-letter pairs, so a student cannot finish the page by scanning first letters alone. When two names begin the same the child has to look at the second letter, and in one pair at the third letter, which is exactly the alphabetizing step third graders are expected to control.
The page works as independent practice, as a quick dictionary-skills warm up, or as a social studies review before a unit on early American leaders. Students read the ten names in the box, write them in ABC order on the numbered lines, and then move to a shorter comparing section that asks them to explain their thinking about four presidency words.
