About this resource
Description
Help your readers learn who is telling the story with this firsthand and secondhand accounts activity. A firsthand account is written by someone who was there and saw an event happen. A secondhand account is written by someone who heard or read about the event later, like a reporter or a history writer. Knowing the difference helps students judge what a text can tell them and why two texts about the same event can feel so different.
Students cut out 24 account cards. Each card has a short title and a one or two sentence account, from a letter home from camp to a report about the first airplane. In small groups, students read a card, decide if the writer was really there, and place it on the Firsthand or Secondhand row of the sort mat. They record each card number on the recording sheet and check their work with the answer key. This firsthand and secondhand accounts sort works well in reading centers, small groups, or as a whole-class warm-up.

Teaching Ideas
Before you start, have partners tell each other about their morning, then retell the partner’s morning to the group. Ask which telling was firsthand. After the firsthand and secondhand accounts activity, invite students to pick one secondhand card and rewrite it as a firsthand account, adding the feelings and details only someone who was there would know.
