About this resource

Description

Cause and effect is one of the first real thinking skills a reader uses. A cause is the reason something happens, and an effect is what happens because of it. Once a child can hold those two ideas side by side, a story stops being a list of events and starts being a chain the reader can follow, predict, and explain. This Flashlight Cause and Effect Worksheet gives second graders a short, friendly story and asks them to trace that chain themselves, one link at a time.

The worksheet opens with a 95-word story about a sleepover, a borrowed flashlight left on all night, and the storm that knocked the power out the very next evening. Students read the story first, then move to a four-row cause and effect chart. Each row already has one side filled in: sometimes the cause is given and the effect is blank, sometimes the reverse. Because the blank column alternates, children cannot fall into a pattern and have to go back to the text for every answer. That back-and-forth between the chart and the story is exactly what makes this 2nd grade cause and effect worksheet work as guided practice rather than a guessing game.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 1 original 95-word cause and effect story
  • A 4-row cause and effect chart with 4 written responses

Three things make this Flashlight Cause and Effect Worksheet especially useful. First, the story is built so that every effect has one clear, findable cause, which means a struggling reader gets the satisfaction of being right instead of the confusion of a passage with fuzzy links. Second, writing the missing half in their own words pushes students past simple recognition and into explaining, which is where the skill actually sticks. Third, the causes and effects chain together across the whole story, so children begin to see that one event can be both an effect of what came before it and the cause of what comes next.

Teachers and parents can stretch this activity in several directions. Read the story aloud and pause after each sentence to ask “why did that happen?” before students ever pick up a pencil. Turn the chart into a hallway game by calling out a cause and having children act out the effect. Ask students to add a fifth row of their own using something that happened at home this week, or have partners swap papers and check whether each answer can be proved with a line from the story. For a writing extension, invite children to rewrite the ending so that one cause changes and let them follow how every effect after it has to change too.
