Description
Cause and effect is one of the first thinking skills a second grader uses to make sense of a story, and it is the question a strong reader asks on every page: what happened, and why did it happen? This what happened cause effect worksheet gives students ten short, everyday sentences and asks them to link the reason to the result. A boy forgets his umbrella and gets soaked. A girl waters her seeds and a sunflower grows. Because every example comes from a child’s own day, students can lean on what they already know while they practice a skill their state reading test will ask about for years to come.
This 2nd grade cause and effect worksheet is built as two short parts so it works as a lesson, as morning work, or as a quick check. In Part A, students draw a line from each cause on the left to the effect it produced on the right; the effects are deliberately scrambled, so a child cannot match them straight across and has to actually read. In Part B, students read a sentence that states an effect and fill in the bubble for the cause that makes sense, which is the same multiple-choice format they will meet on a benchmark assessment. Print one copy per student, work the first pair together on the board, then let them finish independently and check with the included answer key.

There are three reasons this what happened cause effect worksheet helps children learn the skill. Play a quick partner game where one child names a cause and the other invents a sensible effect. Turn a science observation into practice by asking why the plant leaned toward the window. During writing time, challenge students to add one “because” sentence to a story so the events connect instead of just stacking up.
