About this resource

Description

This multiple meanings worksheet helps first graders see that one word can name two very different things. A cap can go on your head or on a bottle, and a bank can hold your coins or sit beside a river. Children learn to read the whole sentence and use its clues to decide which meaning the writer had in mind.

In this 1st grade homonyms worksheet, students read four short sentences with an underlined green word. Beside each sentence are two pictures that show two meanings of that word, and students circle the picture that fits the sentence. Next, they look at two picture pairs and write the one word that names both pictures. Use it as a quick vocabulary lesson, a literacy center, morning work, or homework.

What’s Included

  • One printable multiple meanings worksheet with four circle-the-picture sentences
  • Two picture pairs where students write one word that names both pictures
  • A complete answer key for quick checking

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids

First, it teaches children to use context clues, the words around a word, to figure out its meaning. Second, the colorful pictures give early readers a clear way to show what they understand without heavy writing. Third, noticing that one word can have two meanings builds strong vocabulary habits that help with reading, spelling, and speaking.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Before starting, hold up two objects that share a name, such as a baseball cap and a bottle cap, and ask children what they notice. After the worksheet, invite students to think of their own words with two meanings and draw both. You can also read a picture book aloud and pause whenever you spot a word with more than one meaning.
