Description
Seeds are where almost every plant begins, and that simple idea is one of the first big science ideas a young child meets. This Growing from Seeds Worksheet introduces Kindergarten students to the plants and foods that start life as tiny seeds, and to the order in which a seed turns into a full-grown plant. Children look closely at everyday pictures, decide which ones came from a seed, and then put the stages of a sunflower’s life cycle in the right order. Along the way they build the observing and sequencing habits that early life-science standards ask for.
This kindergarten life cycle worksheet is a two-part, no-prep activity you can hand out as soon as it prints. In the first section, students circle each picture that grows from a seed — a carrot, an apple and a sunflower are hiding among a soccer ball, a crayon and a wagon. In the second section, four pictures of a sunflower appear out of order, and students write 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the boxes to show how the plant grows from seed to sprout to young plant to bloom. Read the directions aloud, work the first picture together, then let students finish on their own or with a partner.

There are three reasons this Growing from Seeds Worksheet works so well with young learners. First, it is entirely picture-based, so children who are not yet reading can show what they know about plants without getting stuck on words. Second, telling the seed pictures apart from the made objects asks students to explain their thinking, which is exactly the kind of talk that turns a science fact into real understanding. Third, numbering the four life cycle stages gives students practice with sequencing, a skill they will lean on in science, reading and math for years to come.
Teachers and parents can stretch this lesson well beyond the page. Plant a few bean or sunflower seeds in a clear cup so children can watch the roots and shoots appear, and check the cup together each morning. Cut open an apple, a pumpkin and a tomato at snack time and count the seeds inside each one. Take a walk and hunt for seeds on the ground, inside pinecones or stuck to a sock. Back inside, ask students to draw the four stages on a paper strip and retell the story of a seed in their own words.
