About this resource
Description
A timeline shows events in the order they happened, and building one is a key reading and social studies skill. This history horizontal timeline of events graphic organizer worksheet helps 4th grade students read an informational passage, pull out the dates, and place each event on a horizontal timeline from the earliest year to the latest.
Students read a short passage about how the Statue of Liberty was built, shipped, opened, and honored. The passage names five dated events out of order, so children must find each year, decide what happened, and then write the year and a short summary of the event in the correct card along the timeline. The cards sit above and below a numbered timeline, just like a real history time line.
What’s Included
- A one-page horizontal timeline worksheet in landscape format
- An informational passage about the history of the Statue of Liberty
- Five numbered timeline cards, each with a year line and two lines to describe the event
- An answer key with every year and event in order
Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
- It builds close reading, since the events are not listed in time order in the passage.
- It practices sequencing with real dates, a skill used across history, science, and reading.
- It asks students to summarize each event in their own words instead of copying a sentence.
Teachers can use this 4th grade timeline worksheet as a whole-class model, a partner activity, or an independent social studies center. Parents and homeschool families can use it to start a talk about American landmarks, or ask children to add a sixth event they learn about on their own. The History Horizontal Timeline of Events Graphic Organizer Worksheet also works well as homework, an early finisher task, or a quick reading check before a history unit test.
