A poem packs a whole day into a few short lines, and a third grader has to slow down to catch everything it holds. The rhyme carries part of the meaning, the order of the stanzas tells time, and small details do big work. The Holiday Time Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives students an original four-stanza poem about Thanksgiving Day, from the smell of pie in the morning to the first snow at dusk, and then asks them to go back into the lines to find cause, rhyme, sequence, and main idea.
This 3rd grade poetry worksheet opens with a poem written in four AABB quatrains. A pumpkin pie cools on the kitchen sill, the family bundles up for the town parade, cousins toss a football in a yard full of leaves, and twelve people gather at one long table to share what they are thankful for. Students read the poem on page one, then turn the page for four fill-in-the-bubble questions, one vocabulary-in-context item, and a written response that asks for two details from the text. Read it aloud together first so the rhyme is heard, then let students reread on their own before they answer.

Three things make this resource useful for building comprehension.
