This Rhyming Bear Reading Comprehension Worksheet builds the reading comprehension skills second graders need most: reading a short text closely, finding the answer right there in the words, and using details to explain thinking. The text on this sheet is a poem, so students also practice the poetry skills their standards ask for — following a story that is told in stanzas, hearing the rhyming words at the end of each line, and using those rhymes as a clue to how the poem is put together. Reading a poem for meaning is different from reading a paragraph, and it takes practice.
The worksheet opens with an original five-stanza poem called The Rhyming Bear, written at a second grade reading level. It follows a brown bear named Riley and her cub Declan through one full year in the woods — waking in spring, fishing in the river, finding honey in a hollow log in summer, eating berries in the fall, and sleeping through the winter snow. A full-colour woodland illustration sits above the poem. On the next page students answer four multiple-choice questions and one written response.
