About this resource

Description

Some words carry more than one meaning, and the only way to tell which one is in play is to read the words around it. The Multiple Meanings Words Worksheet gives students eight sentences built on four of those words, each one used twice with a different meaning, so the same word on the page has to be read two different ways. Students then work four clue items that give two meanings and ask for the single word that carries both.

This 3rd Grade Vocabulary Worksheet is printable and ready to use. Page one holds a word box, eight context sentences with a writing line inside each one, and four meaning-pair items. Page two is the answer key, so checking work takes a minute. Print one copy per student, read the word box together, and then let students work through the sentences on their own.

What’s Included

  • A word box of four multiple-meaning words printed in alphabetical order
  • Eight context sentences, with every word in the box used twice
  • Four clue items that pair two meanings with one word
  • Writing lines sized for third-grade handwriting
  • A complete answer key

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

  • Students learn to pick a meaning from context instead of guessing at a word they already know
  • Seeing one word used twice makes the idea of multiple meanings concrete rather than abstract
  • The clue items build the habit of holding two meanings in mind at once

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Use the Multiple Meanings Words Worksheet to open a vocabulary unit, or as a quick warm-up before a reading lesson. Ask students to say the sentence aloud with each possible meaning and pick the one that makes sense. Challenge early finishers to write their own pair of sentences for a word from the box. At home, hunt for multiple-meaning words together while reading a story or a menu, and keep a running list on the fridge.
