A short story is the friendliest place for a second grader to practise reading for detail. The reader has to hold a character, a setting and a handful of facts in mind at once, then go back into the text and prove what they remember. This Jerry the Beaver Reading Comprehension Worksheet does exactly that with an original narrative about a beaver who builds a lodge, stores food for winter, and helps a newcomer do the same.
Page one holds the passage and an illustrated riverbank scene of Jerry nibbling a branch beside his stick-and-mud lodge. The text is 167 words, written on grade level, and it moves through three beats: how Jerry builds his lodge, what he really eats, and how he helps a young beaver get ready for the cold. Every fact in it is true to real beavers, which are plant eaters, so the story doubles as a small science read. Page two carries the questions. Four fill-in-the-bubble items pull details from all three paragraphs, and a written response asks how Jerry got ready for winter, with two pieces of evidence from the text.
