Description
Finding the key ideas in a piece of non-fiction is one of the first real reading jobs a second grader is given. The details are easy to spot; the big idea is not, because no single sentence usually says it. This Key Ideas Manatees Worksheet builds that skill with a short, friendly informational text about one of the gentlest animals in the water, then asks the reader to go back into the text for proof.
Page one holds the passage and a watercolour scene of a manatee grazing on sea grass. The text is 157 words, written on grade level, and it covers three things in turn: what a manatee looks like, how it eats and breathes, and how people are working to keep it safe. Page two carries the questions. Four fill-in-the-bubble items pull details from all three paragraphs, and the fourth one asks what the text is mostly about. A written response then asks for the most important idea, with two pieces of evidence. The answer key is the last page.
