About this resource

Description

Sight words are the words a beginning reader is not meant to sound out. Was, who and what break the rules a kindergartner has just been taught, and they turn up so often that stopping to decode them costs a child the sentence she was holding in her head. This Kindergarten Sight Words U to W Worksheet takes six words from the Dolch primer list — want, what, under, was, who and went — and gives each one its own card to read, trace and write. Six words, practised properly, are worth more than twenty words skimmed.

This kindergarten dolch words worksheet works in the same three steps on every card. Your child reads the word printed at the top, traces the dotted letters on the first line, then writes the whole word from memory on the empty line below it. Say the word aloud each time she meets it — sight words are stored by sound and shape together, not by shape alone. The lines are long and the letters are large, so a child who is still learning to hold a pencil has room to work. The answer key on page two shows all six words written out.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 6 read-trace-write sight word cards
  • Dolch primer words U to W: want, what, under, was, who, went

Three things make this Kindergarten Sight Words U to W Worksheet do more than a spelling list. First, reading the word before tracing it means your child meets the word as a word, not as a row of letters to copy. Second, tracing builds the motor memory that makes the word come out whole the next time she writes it. Third, the empty line at the bottom is a real test — she has to recall the word without looking, which is exactly what a sight word has to become.

Keep the six words in front of your child for the rest of the week. Write them on cards and hide them around the room for a word hunt. Ask her to find them in a picture book and count how many times each one shows up — was and what will surprise her. Take turns making a silly sentence that uses two of them at once. Five minutes of that does more for a kindergartner than another page of writing, and it turns the words into something she owns.
