Reading comprehension is the skill of pulling real meaning out of a text, and nonfiction is where first graders first learn to do that with facts instead of a story they can guess at. This King of the Jungle Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them a short, true passage about lions and then asks them to go back into that passage to find every answer. Students practice locating a stated detail, working out a new word from the sentence around it, and correcting an idea many of them already believe, which is that lions live in the jungle.
This 1st grade animals worksheet prints as three pages. Page one holds the illustrated lion scene and the whole passage, page two holds five multiple-choice questions, and page three is the complete answer key. Read the passage aloud together the first time, then let students reread it on their own before they fill in a single circle. Every question can be answered straight from the text, so children learn to point at the sentence that proves their choice instead of guessing.

There are three reasons this King of the Jungle Reading Comprehension Worksheet helps children learn. First, the passage is written to a first-grade reading level, with short sentences and familiar words, so the work is understanding rather than decoding. Second, the two domain words the text needs, pride and mane, are each defined in the very sentence that introduces them, which is exactly how state tests ask students to figure out an unfamiliar word. Third, the answers are scrambled and every wrong choice is genuinely wrong, so a child has to read the passage to succeed.
Teachers and parents can stretch this lesson well past the page. Ask children to retell the three paragraphs in order in their own words, or to draw a lion and label the mane, the tall grass, and the pride. Turn the first two sentences into a quick true-or-false game about where lions really live. Compare a lion with another big cat, or with a pet cat at home, and chart what is the same and what is different. Finish by watching the Have Fun Teaching Animal Song and listening for animals that live on the grasslands.
