KWHL stands for what I Know, what I Want to learn, How I will learn it, and what I Learned. The H step is what sets this chart apart: before they open a book, children decide where the answers will come from, which turns reading into a real research plan.
About This Worksheet
This KWHL graphic organizer is designed for 3rd grade students and works with any topic. Children write their topic on the line at the top. In the K box, they list what they already know. In the W box, they write the questions they have. In the H box, they explain how they will find the answers, such as a library book, an encyclopedia, an interview, or a trusted website. After their research, they return to the L box and record what they learned. Each of the four boxes has seven roomy writing lines, and because every response is the child’s own, the sheet is a single open-ended page that fits any unit.
