How to teach Figurative Language
Using L.3.5 Common Core Activity, students demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships and nuances in word meanings.
This activity teaches students how to figure out the meaning of figurative language and word relationships while reading. This activity is perfect for small groups, literacy centers or independent practice.
Students will match idioms to their meanings by playing Go Fish, Memory, or Matching Game. Then, students will then illustrate and explain the meaning of each phrase.

Use this Idiom Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce this lesson by sharing well-known idioms with your students. Ask students to help you figure out what the sentence means. Next, create an anchor chart with your students about the different types of figurative language strategies. Then, distribute materials for students to practice figuring out what different examples of figurative language examples mean. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to student discussions’ about figurative language. After the activity, share students discussions that you heard to promote figurative language skills. Finally, students can continue their practice using the provided worksheets.
