Description
Everything a student has ever touched sits on the thin outer shell of a very large, very layered planet, and a cutaway diagram is the only way to see the rest of it. This Labeling Layers of the Earth Worksheet gives fourth graders that cutaway and asks them to name what each ring is: the crust they live on, the thick mantle beneath it, the liquid outer core and the solid inner core at the centre. Naming the four layers in order is the foundation every later Earth science topic builds on.
This printable 4th grade earth science worksheet is built in two parts. In Part A, four numbered leader lines point to four different rings on the diagram, and students write the name of each layer on the line beside its number using the word box at the top. In Part B, two written-response questions ask them to explain the difference between the outer core and the inner core, and why the mantle takes up the most room inside the Earth. Use it to introduce the four-layer model, as review before a unit test, in a science centre, or as homework after a reading.

There are three clear reasons this Labeling Layers of the Earth Worksheet helps children learn. First, a labeling task makes students read a diagram instead of a sentence, which is the exact skill science assessments test when they hand a child an unfamiliar figure. Second, the word box removes the spelling barrier without removing the thinking: all four layer names are supplied, so the only way to finish is to work out which ring each leader line touches. Third, the two written questions push past recall into explanation, so a student has to say what makes the outer core different from the inner core rather than simply pointing at it.
Teachers and parents can stretch this sheet in plenty of easy ways. Have students colour each layer a different colour and build a key down the side of the page. Ask them to name one thing that could never be seen or drilled into, and explain why. Compare the diagram with a cut apple or a hard-boiled egg and talk about which parts line up and which do not. Finish by asking students to write one new question about the inside of the Earth that the diagram does not answer.
