About this resource
Description
Big F, little f and the F in frog all come together in the Letter F Game, a happy fishing trip for preschool kids. Penny goes fishing off the dock of a little log cabin by a calm crayon-drawn lake. Chubby fish swim back and forth in the water, and every fish carries a letter or a picture on its side. Children tap a fish or swipe to cast the line where they want, the fishing line zips out, the fish bites with a big splash, and Penny reels it in and drops it into a fish-shaped slot in the catch row on the dock. Kids can tap any fish in the catch row and Penny names its letter or picture again. Playing the letter f game again and again helps little learners recognize the big F and the little f, tell F apart from look-alike letters like E and T, and hear that frog, fan, fork, fox and foot all start with F.
In this letter f phonics game, Penny cheers kids on through three short rounds. First they reel in the big F among letters like E, T, L and H, with the tip that big F has a line at the top and a line in the middle, but no line at the bottom. Then they catch the little f among look-alikes like t, l and r, with the tip that little f looks like a candy cane with a little line across. Last they catch the pictures that start with F and skip the van, sun and pig. The letters and pictures a child mixed up come back for one more try. Penny reads every direction out loud, names each answer (“Frog! Frog starts with F.”) and gives a kind hint after a wrong tap. Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.
What’s Included
- Online game that plays in any browser on desktop, tablet and phone
- Included with every Have Fun Teaching membership
- 3 rounds: big F, little f, then pictures that start with F
- Voice directions, splashy sound effects and a star score at the end
Here are three reasons this letter f game helps kids learn. First, every choice swims next to letters and pictures that look or sound close, like E beside F, t beside f and van beside fan, so kids learn to spot exactly what makes an F an F. Second, Penny names the letter or the word after every right answer and uses the same words teachers use, like big F, little f and starts with F, so the lesson sounds the same at home and at school. Third, the splashy catches, the golden fish surprise, the bubbly silly moments, the streak celebrations and the stars at the end keep kids smiling and asking to play again.
Teachers and parents can keep the F fun going after the game. Go “fishing” at home: draw a big F and a little f on paper fish and catch them with a spoon. Stretch out F words together, like fffffish and fffffrog, and feel the air on your lip. Write a big F together: a tall line, a line at the top, a line in the middle, and no line at the bottom.
