About this resource
Description
Big D, little d and the D in dog all come together in the Letter D Game, a happy dinosaur birthday party for preschool kids. Shiny party balloons float up into a sunny sky, each one carrying a letter or a picture, and children pop the balloons with the letter D. Every right tap is a big confetti pop, the badge drops into the party row on the lawn, and Dino the birthday dinosaur hops for joy. Playing the letter d game again and again helps little learners recognize the big D and the little d, tell D apart from look-alike letters like B, P and O, and hear that dog, duck, drum, donut and dolphin all start with D.
In this letter d phonics game, Doodles cheers kids on through four rounds. First they find the big D among letters like B, P and R, with the tip that big D has a straight line and one big bump. Then they find the little d among look-alikes like b, p and q, with the tip that little d starts like a little c, then a tall line goes up high. Next they pop the pictures that start with D and skip the ball, bee and tiger. The bonus round mixes everything together, and the letters and pictures a child mixed up earlier come back for one more try. Doodles reads every direction out loud, names each answer (“Dog! Dog starts with D.”) and gives a kind hint after a wrong tap. Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.

Here are three reasons this letter d game helps kids learn. First, the wrong choices are the real mix-ups young children make, like b for d and B for D, so kids practice exactly what trips them up. Second, Doodles names the letter or the word after every right answer and uses the same words teachers use, like big D, little d and starts with D, so the lesson sounds the same at home and at school. Third, the confetti pops, the dancing dinosaur, the giggling balloons, the golden balloon surprise, streak celebrations and the stars at the end keep kids smiling and asking to play again.
Teachers and parents can keep the D fun going after the game. Go on a D hunt around the room or the house and find a door, a doll and a dish. Write a little d together: start with a little c, then pull a tall line up and back down. Tap a drum and say a D word on every beat. Blow up a balloon, draw a big D on it, and take turns naming things that start with D.
