About this resource

Description

Big E, little e and the E in egg all come together in the Letter E Game, a cozy mail-route adventure for preschool kids. Lexy is the mail carrier in a little watercolor town. First she picks up the mail at the post office, then she delivers letters to the mailboxes on Mailbox Lane, then she brings boxes to her friends in the park. Children tap a stop, Lexy hovers over, she says what to do, and a card asks them to find the letter E. Every right answer does the job: the letters fly into Lexy’s bag, a letter drops into the mailbox, a box reaches the elk or the penguin. Many stops also give a reward for Lexy’s backpack, like a zoom scooter, a town map or a golden envelope, and short-e friends like a hen, a baby elephant and a pelican make their own sounds and do something silly when kids tap them. Playing the letter e game again and again helps little learners recognize the big E and the little e, tell E apart from look-alike letters like F, L and c, and hear that egg, elephant and envelope all start with E.

In this letter e phonics game, Lexy cheers kids on through four parts of town. At the post office they find the big E among letters like F, L and H, with the tip that big E has a tall line and three arms. On Mailbox Lane they find the little e among c, o and a, with the tip that little e has a line across, then goes around like a c. On the Park Path they find the pictures that start with E and skip the igloo, apple and fish. Then Bomzy grabs the mailbag, and on Snowy Hill kids find big E, little e and E pictures to get it back, while the letters and pictures a child mixed up earlier come back for one more try. A wrong answer costs one of five hearts, never a reward, and Lexy gives a kind hint. She reads every direction out loud and names each answer (“Egg! Egg starts with E.”). Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.

What’s Included

  • Online game that plays in any browser on desktop, tablet and phone
  • Included with every Have Fun Teaching membership
  • 4 rounds: Post Office (big E), Mailbox Lane (little e), Park Path (E pictures), then Snowy Hill with everything mixed together
  • Voice directions, cheerful sound effects and a star score at the end

Here are three reasons this letter e game helps kids learn. First, the wrong choices are the real mix-ups young children make, like F for E, c for e and the i in igloo for the e in egg, so kids practice exactly what trips them up. Second, Lexy names the letter or the word after every right answer and uses the same words teachers use, like big E, little e and starts with E, so the lesson sounds the same at home and at school. Third, the rewards, the silly short-e animals (the hen lays an egg, the baby elephant sprays water), the silly Bomzy, streak celebrations and the stars at the end keep kids smiling and asking to play again.

Teachers and parents can keep the E fun going after the game. Play mail carrier at home: write a big E and a little e on paper envelopes and deliver them around the room. Crack an egg for breakfast and say egg, E, egg together. Walk like an elephant and name things that start with E. Write a little e together: start in the middle, go across, then back and around.
