About this resource
Description
Forming the letter M is one of the first real handwriting wins for a young writer. A capital M is four straight strokes — down, up, down, up — while a lowercase m is one short trunk followed by two even humps, so a child who can control those two shapes already has the motor plan for a large slice of the alphabet. This Letter M Handwriting Practice Worksheet gives kindergarten students the guided, repeated practice that letter formation actually takes: a dotted model to trace first, then clear three-line guides to write on independently.
This kindergarten alphabet worksheet is a two-page printable. On page one, children trace two dotted capital M’s and then write three more of their own on the same guide line, repeat the whole pattern for lowercase m, and finish by tracing and writing the words map and mop. Every row carries a solid baseline, a dashed midline, and a topline, so a child can see exactly how tall each letter should stand and where the stroke stops. Print it, hand out pencils, and work down the page from top to bottom — the support drops away row by row as the child gains confidence.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 6 capital M, 6 lowercase m, and 2 word-writing practices on three-line handwriting guides
Three things make this Letter M Handwriting Practice Worksheet work. First, tracing before writing lets a child feel the correct stroke order before being asked to produce it from memory, which is what keeps reversed and backward letters from becoming a habit. Second, the three-line guide turns letter height into something visible rather than something a teacher has to describe, so a child self-corrects a too-tall m without being told. Third, practising the capital and the lowercase form together builds the pairing kindergarten readers need the moment they start reading names and sentences.
Teachers and parents can stretch this practice well past the page. Have children write a giant M in the air with a whole arm before they pick up a pencil, or form the letter with playdough ropes, pipe cleaners, or a finger in a tray of sand. Go on a letter hunt around the room and count every M and m on labels, book covers, and cereal boxes. Sing an alphabet song and freeze on the M. Then ask your child to name three more things that start with M and write the first letter of each one on the back of the sheet.
