Description
Telling living things from non-living things is one of the first big sorting jobs a young scientist takes on, and counting each group is what turns that sorting into real math. The Living Things and Non Living Things Counting Worksheet puts both skills on one page: students read a short number story, decide which things in it are alive, and then add, total and compare the two groups. Birds and trees grow, breathe and need food and water. Benches and kites do not. Once a child can hold that difference in mind while counting, classification stops being a vocabulary lesson and starts being a habit of looking closely at the world.
On this second grade classification worksheet, Emmett walks around the park with his class and sees twelve birds, nine trees, seven benches and five kites. Four questions ask students to count the living things, count the non-living things, find the total, and work out how many more living things there were. A second activity puts four words in a row — dog, rock, sock and tree — and asks students to circle every living thing and write how many they circled. Print it as a warm-up, a science center task, morning work, or a quick check before a unit test.
