Finding the main idea is one of the most important reading skills a student can build, and this main idea hand graphic organizer worksheet gives that thinking a shape a child can hold onto. When readers can name what a text is mostly about, and then point to the details that back it up, they stop retelling everything and start summarizing what matters. Third graders are expected to determine the main idea of a passage, recount the key details, and explain how those details support the idea, and this organizer walks them through all three moves in one place.
This 3rd grade main idea graphic organizer turns an abstract job into a hands-on one. The palm of the hand holds the main idea, and each of the five fingers holds one supporting detail, so students can literally count their evidence out on their fingers. Use it with a chapter book, a short passage, a science article, or a read-aloud: students read first, then fill in the palm, then work outward to the fingers.
