Description
Knowing that a number can name a position as well as an amount is a real turning point in early math, and this Ordinal Numbers Labels Worksheet gives first graders a calm, concrete way to practice it. Children look at a line of five animals waiting their turn, find the front of the line, and label each animal 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th. Because the front of the line is marked for them, the page never turns into a guessing game about which end to start from — students can put all of their attention on counting positions in order and writing the ordinal label that goes with each spot.
This first grade ordinal numbers worksheet is built in two short parts. Part A is the line itself: a rabbit, a kitten, a turtle, a chicken, and a puppy, each standing over a wide writing line where the child prints its ordinal number. Part B moves from the numeral to the word. A word bank holds the five ordinal words in alphabetical order, and four sentences ask students to say where a named animal stands — “The turtle is ________ in line.” Because the bank is alphabetical, the answers never run straight down the box, so children have to look back at the picture and read rather than copy. Print it as a math warm-up, a small-group activity, a center task, or homework. The answer key on page two makes checking the work quick.

This Ordinal Numbers Labels Worksheet helps children in three ways. First, it separates position from quantity: a student who writes 3rd under the third animal is counting places, not objects, which is exactly the distinction ordinal numbers exist to teach. Second, it pairs the numeral with the spelled word, so 4th and fourth become the same idea rather than two things to memorize. Third, the roomy writing lines let first graders form the digits and the ending letters at a comfortable size, so handwriting improves alongside the math instead of competing with it.
Once the page is finished, keep the learning going. Line up five classroom objects — books, crayons, toy cars — and ask students to point to the second one, the fifth one, the one just before the fourth. Have children line up at the door and name their own place in line, then walk the line backward so first becomes fifth. At home, families can use ordinal words while cooking (“first we measure, second we stir”), reading the days of a calendar, or describing the order of a favorite story. Older siblings can extend the activity by going past tenth; younger children can simply point to first, middle, and last.
