About this resource

Description

Learning to count tens and ones is the first real step into place value, and this count tens and ones worksheet gives first graders the practice they need to take it confidently. When a child looks at a two-digit number, they have to see two ideas at once: how many groups of ten are there, and how many single ones are left over. Base ten blocks make that idea visible. A tall rod is one group of ten, a small cube is one, and counting the two kinds of pieces separately is exactly what the tens place and the ones place are asking for. Once a student can move between the blocks, the chart, and the written number, two-digit numbers stop being symbols to memorize and start being quantities they understand.

About This Worksheet

This printable is a two-page activity, and it works in two directions so students practice both halves of the skill. In Part A, six picture cards show base ten blocks. Students count the ten-rods, count the single cubes, write each amount in the tens and ones chart, and then write the whole number on the line below. In Part B, the tens and the ones are given in words and numbers, and students write the number those parts make, including one item with a zero in the ones place. Every block picture is drawn to the real manipulative, so each rod is exactly ten unit cubes tall and a student can check their own counting piece by piece. A complete answer key is included on the second page for quick checking.

What’s Included

  • One printable two-page PDF worksheet, ready to print at home or in the classroom
  • Part A: six base ten block pictures with a tens and ones chart and a number line for each
  • Part B: three written practice items, including one with zero ones
  • A full answer key on the final page
  • Clean, easy-to-read layout with plenty of writing space for first grade handwriting

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

  • It makes place value concrete. Counting real groups of ten before writing a digit builds the meaning behind the number instead of a rule to memorize.
  • It builds both directions of the skill. Reading blocks into a number and turning tens and ones back into a number are different jobs, and this first grade place value worksheet practices both.
  • It grows number sense for adding and subtracting. A student who can see 43 as four tens and three ones is ready for regrouping later on.

Teacher and Parent Ideas

Try building each Part A picture with real base ten blocks or bundled craft sticks before students write anything, so the drawing on the page matches something they have held. Ask students to say each answer out loud in two ways, “five tens and five ones” and “fifty-five,” so the words and the digits connect. For an easy extension, have partners take turns naming a number under one hundred while the other builds it in tens and ones. Students who finish early can flip the page over and draw their own block picture for a classmate to count. Sending this count tens and ones worksheet home makes a simple five-minute review that families can do at the kitchen table.
