Research Skills Start With a Partner
Real research begins long before a report is due. It begins when two students choose a topic together, decide where to look for facts, and write down what they find. The Partnered Research Project Worksheet walks second graders through that whole process with a partner sitting beside them, so a big job feels shared instead of overwhelming. Students order the four steps of a research project, choose the best place to find each answer, and then plan a project of their own. Along the way they practice the speaking and listening habits that make partner work go smoothly: taking turns, agreeing on a topic, and listening to a good idea that is not your own.
How to Use This Worksheet
Print one copy for each student, or one copy for each pair of partners. In Part A, students number the four research steps from 1 to 4 to show the correct order, from picking a topic all the way to sharing the finished project with the class. In Part B, four questions ask students to fill in the bubble beside the best place to find each answer. Some answers live in a book, some live on a website, and one is best found by asking a person, which is exactly the point. Part C is where partners talk and write together: they record who their partner is and what topic they have chosen. Because Part C is a plan, those answers will vary by pair, and the included answer key says so.

Pair a confident reader with a developing reader and let them read the steps aloud to each other. After Part B, ask each pair to name one more place they could look and to explain why it would work. At home, families can turn Part C into a weekend mini project by choosing one question and finding the answer together at the library. Revisit the completed Partnered Research Project Worksheet at the end of the unit and let students check off the steps they finished.
