Every story turns on a problem, and readers who can name that problem and track how the characters answer it understand far more of what they read. This Problem and Solutions Graphic Organizer Worksheet gives third grade readers a clear place to record all four parts of that thinking: the problem itself, the three different solutions the characters try, and the one solution that finally works. Because the organizer is filled in from an original story printed right on the page, students practice the skill on real text instead of on a blank template.
Students begin by reading a short passage about a class of children whose bean plants keep drying out over the weekend. The class tries watering the plants early, then moving the cups away from the hot window, and finally a bottle that drips water slowly. Students write the problem in the top box, record each attempted solution in its own labeled box, and then decide in the last box which solution worked best and explain why. That final box is where the sheet moves past recall and asks for a short written judgment, which is exactly the kind of thinking third grade reading assessments expect. A complete answer key is included on the second page.
