Description
Before a young writer can tell a good story, they have to know what a story is made of. This Fictional Narrative Worksheet gives 3rd Grade students a single page on which to plan one, using a book they have already read and loved as their starting point. Students name the book and its author, decide on the main idea of the narrative they want to write, lay out four events in the order they happen, and finish with a closing statement. By the time the page is full, they are not staring at a blank sheet wondering where to begin: they are holding the skeleton of a story they can draft.
The Fictional Narrative Worksheet works as a pre-writing step rather than a test, so every response belongs to the student. Read a chapter book together, or let each student choose a favourite from the class library, and then ask them to borrow one character and imagine a brand-new adventure for that character. The four numbered event lines are the part that does the real teaching: they force a sequence, which is exactly what a third grader is expected to control in narrative writing. Print one per student, or slide it into a sheet protector and use it again with a new book each week. It works just as well for a whole-class modelled lesson, a small guided writing group, or independent work at a writing centre.
