Strong readers do not simply move their eyes across a story; they wonder about it, they hold on to the small facts the author supplies, and they keep track of where and when everything is happening. This worksheet opens with a short original story about a girl named Alice who spends a cool Saturday morning picking apples with her grandma. Students read the story once for enjoyment, then read it again with a pencil in hand and fill in the boxes below it. The Details box asks for three facts pulled from anywhere in the text. The Where and When boxes split the setting into its two halves, which is exactly how the reading standards describe it.
