This reading fluency worksheet gives 2nd Grade students a short passage to read out loud, again and again, and a simple chart to track how much faster and smoother they get. Fluency is the bridge between decoding words and understanding them. A reader who has to stop and sound out every third word spends all of their attention on the words themselves and has none left for the meaning, so building an easy, accurate reading rate is one of the most useful things a second grader can practice. The way fluency grows is repeated oral reading: read the same passage several times across a few weeks, with someone listening, and watch the score climb.
The passage on this page, The Busy Beaver, is a 129-word nonfiction story written at a second-grade reading level, and every line is numbered in the margin with a running word count so the listener can find the exact stopping point at one minute without counting words by hand. Read the story out loud while a teacher, parent or reading buddy times one minute, then write the date and the number of words read correctly in the chart underneath. Try the same passage again a week later and compare. The chart has six rows, which is enough to follow one reader across a whole grading period. A typical second grader reads about 100 words correctly per minute by spring, so that number makes a fair goal to aim for. This reading fluency worksheet is a single page with nothing to grade, so it works just as well at a reading center as it does at the kitchen table.
