About this resource
Description
How to Teach Reading Fluency and Accuracy
A running record shows a teacher exactly how a child reads: which words come easily, which ones cause a stumble, and which mistakes the reader notices and fixes on their own. This reading fluency and accuracy worksheet gives first grade teachers a clean page to capture that information while a student reads aloud, so the numbers behind every reading level decision come from real evidence.
How to Use This Worksheet
Fill in the student, date and text at the top. As the child reads, write the page number in the first column and mark the Words Read column with a check for every word read correctly. Write any error above the word, and tally errors (E) and self-corrections (SC) in the last two columns. Add each column in the Totals row. Then time one minute of reading, subtract the errors to find words correct per minute (WCPM), and record the accuracy percentage and the reading level. This running record form works with any leveled book or benchmark passage.
What’s Included
- One printable teacher page for recording a reading conference
- Student, date and text/level fields
- A 15-row running record grid with Page, Words Read, E and SC columns plus a Totals row
- A One-Minute Check strip for words read, errors, WCPM, accuracy and reading level
Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, it turns a read-aloud into data, so every student is placed in books that are neither too easy nor too hard. Second, tracking self-corrections shows whether a child is monitoring meaning, a key habit of strong readers. Third, repeating the one-minute check over the year makes growth in reading rate easy to see and celebrate with the child and family.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Keep a copy in each guided reading folder and take a new record every few weeks. Pair this page with a fluency checklist during conferences, and plot each WCPM score on a progress chart. Homeschool parents can use the same reading fluency and accuracy worksheet with any library book to track progress at home.
